What’s the Difference Between Static and Dynamic ADAS Calibration?

Advanced Driver Assistance System, also known as ADAS, has a significant impact on safety conditions on the road. As with any other sensitive feature related to your vehicle, the ADAS features also need proper maintenance on occasion, such as windshield replacement.

At Easy Auto Glass, we provide high-quality auto glass services for your vehicle! We also provide in-house ADAS calibrations on top of our windshield replacement services to provide you with an opportunity to get all the maintenance needed for your vehicle in one place. So check out our windshield repair and replacement offers and contact us to schedule an appointment!

What Is ADAS, and How Does It Improve Safety?

Safety is the top priority of any vehicle’s owner. It’s why so much effort and research go into developing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These systems enhance current driving capabilities and help the driver control their vehicle better, and even prevent some dangerous situations from occurring. While these systems seem futuristic, they’re already available in many vehicles. But what are the most common features that the ADAS provide? Let’s have a look!

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Adaptive cruise control, also known as ACC, is one of the most valuable features of any ADAS. It helps the drivers to maintain a safe following distance and stay within the speed limit. The ACC system adjusts the vehicle’s speed automatically to keep that safe distance between vehicles.

Collision Avoidance Systems

This safety system is designed to prevent collisions or significantly decrease their severity. Besides warning and alerting the driver, some collision avoidance systems also mitigate risk by overriding them. These types of systems will help change the vehicle’s throttle or apply its brakes in order for a collision to be avoided.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

This system significantly improves safety on the road by automatically stopping the vehicle if the driver fails to do so. In addition, the feature is constantly monitoring the road condition to identify and prevent potentially dangerous situations.

Blind-spot Monitoring

Blind-spot monitoring is an essential feature of the ADAS system. It uses sensors to detect objects and other vehicles located on the driver’s side and rear. If an object or another car has been detected, the system warns the driver by sound, vibration or both.

Adaptive Headlights

Adaptive headlights give better visibility to the drivers in changing roadway conditions, such as curves. This feature allows for headlights to move side to side as the steering wheel turns, but it’s important to note that the feature does not automatically switch from low to high beams.

Adaptive Light Control

The adaptive light control feature gives drivers better visibility during the night and improves nighttime traffic safety. ALC optimizes the headlamp illumination by continuously adapting it to current driving conditions.

What Is the Difference Between Static and Dynamic ADAS Calibration?

Dynamic ADAS Calibration

Dynamic ADAS calibration, also known as mobile or on-road ADAS calibration, uses a handheld unit that is plugged directly into the vehicle’s system. This type of calibration requires the vehicle to be in motion. This is why, once the unit is being plugged into the vehicle, it will begin to drive at a specific speed, for a specific distance and in optimal weather conditions. The manufacturer specifies all these important details.

Static ADAS Calibration

For the static ADAS Calibration, the vehicle doesn’t need to be in motion, and the service can be performed while the car is parked in place. This type of calibration requires a large space and specific equipment, which is why it is always done in a specialized auto workshop. The tools used for static ADAS calibration use a series of specific targets that the sensors must be able to read to recalibrate accurately. The vehicle needs to be placed at a specific distance from the targets. The targets’ height also needs to be adjusted.

Static and dynamic ADAS calibration are two different methods that can’t be substituted for each other. Your vehicle manufacturer will indicate which method should be used, along with specific parameters to be considered during testing and calibration. For both, proper tire pressure and enough fuel in the tank play an essential role in the proper calibration of vehicles.

It’s rare for auto glass shops to offer ADAS recalibration services in addition to a windshield replacement service. At Easy Auto Glass, we strive to be the best in the business and offer ADAS calibration on top of our windshield repair and replacement services! Contact us today or visit our shop, situated in Calgary, to discuss how we can help.

How Long Does It Take to Recalibrate ADAS?

The ADAS calibration can take from 30 minutes to over 3 hours, depending on the vehicle condition and specifics. The wait time is often longer for vehicles that require extensive recalibration due to windshield replacement.

When Should You Recalibrate the ADAS System of Your Vehicle?

ADAS recalibration is required on several occasions:

  • When your vehicle’s windshield has been replaced or removed for any reason.

  • When a wheel realignment has been performed.

  • When your car suspension has been changed. (Tire Size, Lift Kit, etc.)

  • If your vehicle camera has been disconnected for any reason.

  • If your vehicle has been in a collision.

Easy Auto Glass’s Free Rock Chip Repair Program Guidelines and Answers

In March of 2016 we became the 1st Canadian Auto Glass company to provide FREE Rock Chip Repairs on any installed windshield done at our location in store.

It’s that Easy!  There are NO timelines or limited time specials you, as our customer, need to be worried about. Phone and book in for an appointment for the repair and we will take care of the rest.

  1. Once we have replaced your windshield in store, whether by customer pay or insurance company (not mobile installations) we will repair the rock chips for the life of the windshield if YOU (the customer) are the original owner and the windshield we (Easy Auto Glass) have installed. We record which brand of manufacturers windshield was used at time of installation. (Original Equipment, Original Equipment Equivalent)
  2. The FREE Rock Chip Repair Program is NOT transferable to another individual or to be used as a selling tool if the vehicle is sold or traded in.
  3. The FREE Rock Chip Repair Program DOES apply to immediate family members living in the same residence using the vehicle. (ie: spouse, children, etc.)
  1. If we at Easy deem the rock chip is beyond repair ( structural integrity of the windshield ) or if the windshield is cracked, we DO have the right to cease any further repairs on the windshield. We will attempt every course of action to save the windshield but at a certain point in time there is only so much our trained technicians can do. Customer safety is the 1st
  2. If the windshield is changed by another company, such as a body shop, dealership, hail repair company, the FREE Rock Chip Repair program ceases to be offered on said vehicle.
  3. We provide at time of pick up the EASY Rock Chip Repair Stickers. Once you get a rock chip, cover the rock chip on the OUTSIDE of the windshield, like you would a band aid on a cut, to keep the dirt and moisture out of the chip.  Water and dirt getting into the chip itself can alter how the repair structurally turns out and for clarity. If you don’t have EASY Stickers than Scotch tape or clear packaging tape will do in a pinch.

The program speaks for itself.  We’re doing our part to keep the windshield in your vehicle as long as we can, and we all know that can be challenging living in Calgary. Thousands of customers whether it’s their personal vehicle or fleet companies, use the FREE Rock Chip Program.

We’ve done the hard work so now it’s up to you to come back to see us, and why wouldn’t you?

The repairs are FREE!
